Phil Quartararo
Phil Quartararo is Executive Vice President of EMI Music North America and is part of the leadership team at EMI - the world's largest independent music company. Mr. Quartararo is one of the modern music industry's best-known and most respected executives. Affectionately known as "Phil Q," he is highly regarded as an astute manager, a brilliant marketer and an executive who is both passionate about artists and the music they create. In 2002, Quartararo was named Executive Vice President of EMI Music North America and later assumed the title of President, EMI Music Marketing. During his tenure, he led a total reinvention of EMI Music Marketing, in which he reorganized what had been a sales and distribution company into a strong, central marketing resource designed to be a resource to traditional and non-traditional retail, to EMI's labels, and to consumers. Under his leadership, EMM is charged with developing new revenue streams, providing resource to EMI's label marketing functions and with serving key market segments in traditional retail and non-traditional channels. EMM targets specialty markets such as sports and lifestyle, as well as areas focusing on licensing for soundtracks and synchronization. EMI Music Marketing also encompasses the company's sales, catalogue development and special markets efforts, and includes a new area focusing on the development of music DVDs from EMI's artists. A Brooklyn, NY native, Mr. Quartararo began his music career as a high school entrepreneur, by booking musical acts out of his Long Island bedroom. His drive led him to Syracuse University, where as a student he worked as a college promotion rep for A&M Records. He built on his prodigious beginnings with successful stints in regional promotion for A&M and RCA Records, and later as vice president of promotion at Island Records. While at Island, his expertise helped break some of the biggest acts of the '80's, including U2. He went on to be part of the founding team that launched Virgin Records in the United States in 1986, and in 1992, he became Virgin USA's president and CEO. During his tenure at Virgin, the label become a force both in the U.S. and internationally, with artists such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, the Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz and the Spice Girls among others. In 1997, Mr. Quartararo became president of Warner Bros. Records where he guided labels such as Warner Bros. and Reprise through one of the most successful periods in their long history, with a string of hit releases by such artists as Madonna, Eric Clapton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Goo Goo Dolls, Faith Hill, newcomers Linkin Park and Josh Groban, whom he signed to the label. He is on the Board of Directors of the TJ Martel Foundation, Syracuse University, Newhouse School of Public Communication, the Musicians Assistance Program, the RIAA, Special Olympics, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Crippled Children's Society, Gibson Guitar and the Grammy Foundation. |
