Adopt a Turkey

ginnifer.jpgTofurky is so last year. The newest contrarian move for Thanksgiving coming up in just a few weeks? Adopt a turkey!

Instead of eating the big bird at the Big Dinner, let one live by doing what people like "Big Love" actress Ginnifer Goodwin are doing this year with Adopt-A-Turkey.

The program, organized by Farm Sanctuary, aims to raise awareness for the plight of Mr. Tom, by shining a light on the conditions (horrific and filthy, namely) that the nearly 300 million slaughtered birds endure.

Now, not everyone is going to be down with this, but it's a great thought for the legions of vegetarians and vegans out there, not to mention a cool way to start a new tradition. If you've got a young veggie in the family, why not set an extra place setting at your table to signify their thoughtfulness of thinking on behalf of the turkeys.

As Olive, one of the featured turkey's on Farm Sanctuary's Web site says, "I'm a lover not a platter!"
