'Bar Hunger' Starring David Arquette

If you passed by Madison Square Garden yesterday or today, odds are you noticed a large plastic box filled with furniture and an actor. No, he isn't preparing for his next role as David Blaine. Instead, actor David Arquette is partnering with Snickers and Feeding America to help the one in eight Americans struggling with hunger.

This "Bar Hunger" campaign has Snickers using a variety of means to get the word out and have people make a "chomptribution" to the cause, in its plan to donate the equivalent of at least 3 million meals to Feeding America this year. On Snickers' Facebook page, whenever someone joins the group, Snickers will donate $1, and will match every $1 donated up to a total of $25,000. Also, you can make a $5 donation to Feeding America by texting the word "BAR" to 90999, which runs through December 31, 2009. And, if you're in New York City today, you can make a cash donation of any size outside of Madison Square Garden.

Arquette, who is the first-ever chairman of Feeding America's Entertainment Council, is spending the better part of two days in the Bar Hunger box on Madison Square Garden's marquee, aiming to raise $250,000 in donations for Feeding America. He's been blogging and uploading videos and photos, which will be distributed via outlets like Facebook and Twitter.

He even spoke briefly with our own Debra Goldstein, mentioning how wide Feeding America's reach is. "You know, Feeding America does feed the homeless and it's a very important aspect of the work that they do, but for the most part, it's working Americans. It's people that are just trying to get by, and with the money they save, they can pay their electricity bill, water and gas. It really touches you."
