Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher Launch "DNA" Foundation
Watch out, Brad and Angelina, there's a new Hollywood couple vying for the Most Altruistic award this year. (Note: that is not a real award, and we fully recognize these celebs are acting out of the goodness of their hearts, which we completely condone!) Demi Moore and her husband Ashton Kutcher — he of the tweet to fight malaria fame and the "Race to One Million" campaign — have launched the Demi and Ashton Foundation, a.k.a. DNA, in an effort to raise awareness about modern day sex slavery.
Since they are the de facto social media guru couple, Moore and Kutcher are promoting their cause via a Facebook fanpage and a Twitter page, @dnafoundation. Using these two mediums, they are able to interact with their followers at a more rapid pace, keeping them updated with news, events, and updates about the human trafficking industry.
The DNA Foundation's Facebook Fanpage emphasizes the collaborative nature of the foundation: "The DNA Foundation is an nonprofit created on the notion that freedom is an essential building block of humanity. We are committed to protecting the freedom of the world's most vulnerable citizens by forcing sex slavery out of the shadows and into the spotlight ...We hope you join us in this battle to maintain the integrity of the DNA of humanity."
Moore and Kutcher are now involved in the Pepsi Refresh Celebrity Challenge, where celebrities are campaigning to bring awareness to the charities and non-profit foundations about which they feel most strongly. You can learn more about Pepsi's grant money here on Tonic.
The usage of Facebook and Twitter as their main mode of communication is already paying off: Kutcher and Moore have been posting pictures, videos, and first-person narratives about their experiences meeting people who have been involved in the sex trade. Kutcher is a dynamo when it comes to 21st century social media, and he is fully implementing it to its fullest humanitarian potential with the DNA Foundation.
