Why Is This Man Holding a Goat?
What's a guy with a goat in his arms got to do with having a great meal on vacation this summer? In the case of this goat from Fairburry, Ill., quite a lot. (And don't worry, vegetarian readers: this is a goat-curry-free zone.)
This goat is part of a 100-animal herd that's sheltered by a coverall that was funded by the Frontera Farmer Foundation, a nonprofit that helps small, sustainable Chicago-area farms. (The goat's pal in this shot is Justin Kilgus, his owner at Pleasant Meadows Farm.) Since 2003, the foundation has awarded grants to farms (like Kilgus') to help them thrive ... and survive.
If the name Frontera sounds familiar, that's because it's named after Frontera Grill, one of Chicago's best restaurants, founded by Rick Bayless of PBS and Top Chef Masters fame. If you're in Chicago for even one night this summer, this foodies' delight is a must-visit, particularly for anyone that appreciates fresh and creative Mexican cuisine. And if you can't get a reservation, Bayless' other Chicago restaurant, Topolobampo, is also terrific.
But still not as terrific as a hug from a goat!
