Glamour Magazine Sizes Up The Modeling Industry
When model Lizzie Miller appeared half naked in September's Glamour magazine. The image of the plus sized model, who at a mere size 12 was the picture of beauty, floated around the internet. The model, sporting a little bit of belly flab, was like one of us.
Now, following the positive response from it, Glamour is devoting a spread to honor the fuller figure in its November issue. Accompanying the article, titled, Oh. Wow. These Bodies Are Beautiful, is a photograph of seven models who are nothing close to the industry's sample size of 2.
The photograph is raw and amazing. In the buff you find Miller who is joined by Crystal Renn, Amy Lemons, Ashley Graham, Kate Dillon, Anansa Sims, and Jennie Runk. Every ripple, fold and dimple out there for all to see. Refreshing indeed!
"We're committing to picturing a wider range of body types on our pages," said Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive on Ellen DeGeneres. That's a huge statement to make when plus sized women have inconsistently been recommended in the marketplace. Whether it's in retail or entertainment, girls who are more 12 than 2 have a hard time fitting in.
But Glamour appears to be honoring that declaration in this month's issue. The magazine doesn't digitally alter photos to make models/singers/actresses look thinner says public relations director Samantha Rosenthal to U.S. News World & Report: "That's never been our policy," she says, "and the conversation has moved far beyond that." She later went to the Today Show to discuss how the magazine would continue to feature full-figured women.
It remains to be seen how long Glamour can commit to this notion - but it's a definitely a step in the right direction. Meanwhile, feeling poopy about your body image? Check out this article that helps you feel better about being in the skin you're in.
