Kelly Buchanan is a Brooklyn singer-songwriter who's toured with Mike Doughtry, Martha Wainwright and the The Whigs, but she's been kept off the road for some time after suffering traumatic brain damage in a street hockey game last year. According to doctors, the ball must have been traveling 50 mph when it struck her in the head, and it's estimated that it'll take three years for her to fully recover. Besides behind a great artist, any girl who's cool enough to play street hockey deserves support, which is what several artists are doing Aug. 12 with a benefit show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood.
The ASCAP Presents concert will include sets by Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Sara Bareilles, Matt Scannel and Paris Carney, most of which will include a cover song from Buchanan's eponymous fourth album. All proceeds from the concert will go toward her mounting medical bills.
Kyler England, the benefit's organizer and Buchanan's classmate at the Berklee College of Music, says, "I've known Kelly for a long time, and I'm really thrilled for this opportunity to bring the L.A. music community together to celebrate the music of one of our own. I'm excited to hear my band, as well as some of the other artists, cover Kelly's songs and to draw some well-deserved attention to her music, since Kelly has been unable to tour behind her record -- yet. We're all pulling for her full recovery, and hope that we can help her in the meantime through this benefit show."
Buchanan's latest album includes song contributions from the likes of Tracy Bonham, Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and professional songsmith Jeff Cohen (Josh Groban, Sugarland). Tickets ($25) for the all-ages show are available on the Troubador's website, while people who can't make the show can make donations at Buchanan's site. Here's to a speedy recovery.
