Julie of "Julie and Julia" Cooks Up New Book
With all the buzz and circumstance over her book, "Julie and Julia," which begat a movie of the same name, food blogger-turned-author Julie Powell's latest venture has entered the world with much less fanfare. That, or we're all just Julie/Julia'd out at the moment.
Whatever the case, Powell's new book, "Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession," coming out on Tuesday, peels away another layer of the life and marriage that was artistically-licensed out of the Nora Ephron-directed film.
Though shown in the film as being strong, with bumps, Powell's marriage in reality went somthing like this: she cheated on her husband, and he cheated on her. As their marriage fell into ruins, Powell went into butchering, reports USA TODAY.
Yes, like the kind that cuts veal shanks, lamb roasts and fillets of beef. Powell's book covers her apprenticeship at Fleisher's Grass Fed and Organic Meats in the Catskills of New York, but also her two-year affair — in detail. (The couple, both 36, are still married.)
It's a side of Powell that could alienate and even anger some of her following. Her portrayal by Amy Adams, by Powell's own admission, was a bit more sweetened up in the movie version of her life.
But like they say in the meat-carving biz: them's the breaks.
