Madonna is in Malawi, but she's not there to rock some concert hall. According to her website, the superstar singer is laying the foundation stone for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. It's a new girls school she's helping build through the Raising Malawi charity. The ceremony took place Monday at 3 pm.

"Our vision for the school is to empower girls to become Malawi's future leaders," wrote Madonna on her website. "Our goal is to teach them to challenge themselves, serve their local communities and develop their country."

Madonna sees this as such an important event that she brought her entire family. She is also meeting with the country's president while she's there.

She continues, "We created this vision in partnership with the local Malawian Ministry of Education, and other educational experts from Malawi, Sub-Saharan African and elsewhere around the world. We are developing and using innovative educational approaches, cutting-edge architectural design methods, and other modern technologies, which we hope, will become a replicable model for girls secondary school education. Research proves that young girls throughout the developing world are often left without opportunities to receive a comprehensive education and the benefits that education can provide."

Madonna might be known as the Material Girl, but these days she's bringing materials to the world's most needy.

Covering entertainment since the early '90s, David Jenison has conducted over 1,000 interview features that range from roving through Havana with the Happy Mondays to upending the Mayor of Hermosa Beach's house with Pennywise.
