The Web is a wonderful thing when it comes to finding out what to be on the scariest day of the year. I mean, who wants to show up at the annual party dressed like everyone else, or dressed in last year's top costume.

Apparently those who work at Google love finding out what's hot and what's not for dressing up. So guess what the late Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Max, the protagonist of Where The Wild Things Are, have in common this year?

They're top costume choices for the masses, according to Google, which used its search technology to investigate the top terms in online search for Halloween costumes.

According to the Official Google Blog, the search titan employed its own Insights for Search to uncover the fastest-rising searches related to the word "costume" this year in the US. Pop star Lady Gaga leads the chart.

The late pop icon Jackson is high on the list, as are vampires. For the little ones, favorites include the ladybug, Tinkerbell and Minnie Mouse look.

In Canada the trend is for couple costumes as well as the characters from the literary classic Alice in Wonderland.

When it comes to canine dress up, the Taco dog outfit and a dog shark costume were high ranking. So was a banana costume for some inexplicable reason.
