M.J.'s B-Day Inspires World Record

Guinness Book will make the final determination next week, but as of right now, it appears Mexico City set a new world record for the most people simultaneously doing the "Thriller" dance. The 13,000-person event last Saturday was meant to celebrate what would have been Michael Jackson's 51st birthday.

The dance celebration, organized by Javier Hildago, features lots of people dressed up as characters from the famous John Landis "Thriller" video. There was even an official Jackson impersonator -- Hector Jackson -- leading the group in a jacket reminiscent of the vid. Check out footage from the massive boogie in the clip below.

In terms of sheer numbers, the Mexico City event is sure a lock for Guinness World Records considering the previous record was 242 people at the College of William & Mary in Virginia (apparently they weren't on hand for this "Thriller" event at a Philippines prison). Guinness, however, must also confirm other details, like whether people were actually doing the dance, before they can give the potential record their official stamp.

In the past week, there was also the Spike Lee-led, 10,000-person party in Brooklyn's Prospect Park while many fans also flocked to Neverland Ranch and the singer's star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Jackson's hometown, Gary, Indiana, even had a block party.

Covering entertainment since the early '90s, David Jenison has conducted over 1,000 interview features that range from roving through Havana with the Happy Mondays to upending the Mayor of Hermosa Beach's house with Pennywise.
