Smartphone Game Is Now a Real Name Game

I just expounded earlier this week about how Palm's Pixi is the cutest named new mobile handset from a vendor struggling to gain market share from the likes of Apple and its iPhone, and the ultimate business device, Research in Motion's BlackBerry.

And then along comes Motorola and maybe the cutest ever name for a smartphone, the CLIQ.

I know what you're thinking, what's in a name. Well, when it comes to smartphones, it's all about the features, the snazz, the glimmer and the glam. And, yes, a name can mean a lot.

Just think for a moment, what does the word iPhone now represent? Slick, sleek, shiny and very, very sweet, both in looks and features.

The Pixi comes close with its very advanced Palm webOS platform. And now Motorola, which has been struggling longer and harder than even Palm to regain footing, is showing signs of its old self (remember the RAZR? Yes, that was Moto's genius at work).

And, hey, who doesn't want to be in a clique, part of a clique and lead a clique, right? The term connotes being "it," having "it" and just simply being viewed as cool.

Coming in the next quarter, through wireless carrier T-Mobile, the Android phone features Motorola's "MOTOBLUR" technology that promises to sync up everything from everywhere, including photos, contacts, content and e-mails, whether it's in social network world such as Facebook or Twitter, or your work e-mail base. If CLIQ's features sound a little bit like what Palm's new Pre and Pixi OS offers, it is, but that's cool. Mobile device makers all know we want access to our data and communication outlets to be easy and simple to manage.

In addition, for those of us (like me) who lose our phones on a consistent basis, the fact that MOTOBLUR offers automatic backup of all that stuff makes me feel pretty good, and they make it easy to wipe the handset clean if necessary.

I'm definitely interested in being part of Motorola's new handset clique so far. And happy to see that Moto is getting some of its Mojo back on track.
