MP3-Hating Metallica Unveil MP3-Playing JacketBy Steve Tanner | Saturday, July 25, 2009 2:00 PM ET Proving that yes, indeed, it is all about the money, aging heavy metal band Metallica has unveiled a new Metallica-branded jacket, complete with an amp and speakers built into the hood and -- drum roll, please -- a built-in iPod dock. You heard me. This is the same Metallica that lobbied hard against Napster and favored the now-abandoned strategy of using digital rights management technology to prevent people from sharing music files. The story was reported by Talk2MyShirt.com, which somehow is able to dedicate its entire blog to wearable electronics. The limited edition Metallica M4 Jacket is manufactured by clothing manufacturer Sessions, which sports a loyal following of skateboarders and snowboarders (you've got to see the video promo for the jacket, which attempts to make it look as hard and tough as the band once was). If the all-black jacket is worth $330 of your hard-earned dollars -- and your wife approves (most of their fans are not the usual demographic for metal music) -- then you can clamor to buy one of only 800 when it's released in August. In case you weren't paying attention to the controversy ignited by Metallica's rather harsh words to fans who downloaded their music on Napster back in 2000, this Wired article should help get you up to speed. And who can forget this gem: (Photo courtesy of Sessions) Steve Tanner is a freelance writer based in the Santa Cruz Mountains who got his start covering the meteoric rise and subsequent crash-landing of Silicon Valley’s dot-com experiment. |

Metallica is not an "MP3 hating" band, but it seems that you may be stuck in 2000, which was 9 years ago. Please wake up and check the facts about Metallica and what they have been up to during the last 9 years and then try again.
Sorry for the negative tone but it's exhausting to read the same bulls**t all over the Internet written by people who don't know or care what they're writing about.
Thanks.

Metallica are awesome. Is it wrong to go in and fight against people illegally downloading your music? Does it mean their not 'hard or tough' any more? I dont think so. Stand at the front of one of their gigs and you will see how hard they are.. but your feeble little ear probably couldnt cope!

What Michal and Ben said. Napster was NINE YEARS AGO!!!
Every one of their songs is available on iTunes today.
I hate haters stuck in the past.

Thanks for the feedback. As a fan of their early work from way back in the 80s (Master of Puppets, especially), I guess I'm not as keen to defend their output from the last 18 years or so.
Perhaps I was a little harsh, but if the shoe fits...
I appreciate the comments all the same.
