Normal Green: Nature Calls

natureMost of us in the United States just "sprang forward" by setting our clocks ahead one hour in the wee hours of March 8. For those grousing about losing that hour of sleep on a Saturday night, look at the bright (pun intended!) side: we gained more daylight. Why not spend that extra hour or so of sunlight everyday outside enjoying nature?

Thanks to a new campaign by the Nature Conservancy in partnership with Back to Nature foods, spending time outside doesn't have to take much time or require much planning, especially if you start right in our own backyard.

I've always been a reluctant nature buff. I'd rather get lost exploring a city than hiking a trail. I'd prefer to spend my time walking miles inside of a great museum than outdoors. I have to admit that having children gave me a new appreciation for the natural world. They are so entranced by the world around them, particularly the plants and animals contained within it, that they remind me everyday that nature is all about the simple pleasures.

According to the Back to Nature field guide, the first top to enjoying nature is your own backyard. If you have a yard, try to spot a bird or animal or plant a new plant. No outdoor space where you live? Go slightly further afield to a park in your neighborhood, spread out a blanket and read a book. Enjoy the sunshine.

Next up: stop and smell the roses. Literally. Take a moment to enjoy your neighbor's gardens. Look up at the sky more often and find some cloud animals. Take a walk even if it's raining. Make time to watch the sunrise or sunset.

If you week is too busy, make some time on Sunday to slow down. Take a walk to the nearest park or make your way to a hiking trail. Again, just quietly observe the nature around you and try to spot five different kinds of trees, plants, or animals.

So stop complaining about how tired you are. Tonight, enjoy the daylight by taking a walk after work or having a picnic dinner in your backyard. You'll feel more energized and maybe even sleep better. Click here for more great tips and to download your own Back to Nature field guide.
