Recycle ON Your iPhone

Cell phones can do just about anything today. I personally use my iPhone to find out the names of songs I hear on the radio, check the weather, send emails and even get driving directions. With more and more applications released on the iPhone every week, there are always a few green applications launching into the market to help make your life just a little bit better.

One application that I recently discovered (thanks to treehugger) is an application called iRecycle. This application that works with both the iPhone and iPod Touch and takes local recycling to a new level.

Lets face it — sometimes you have no clue how you can get rid of stuff in your home and you resort to throwing everything in the trash. This application tells you where you can recycle locally in your area. Now, you may know the location of your local recycling plant to recycle your aluminum, paper and plastic — but what about some of the more difficult items which you wouldn’t normally recycle? This is where this application becomes extremely useful. It can tell you where to recycle items ranging from motor oil to rechargeable batteries to old computers.

It does all this while also providing step-by-step driving (or walking or bike riding, if you rather) directions from Point A to Point B. Best of all, when you find your desired recycle location for, let's say, your old car battery, it also gives you that location’s hours of operation, a link to the website (if they have one) and also tells you other materials that the recycler accepts. Although you may not have realized it before, innovative ideas like these are elevating cell phones and mp3 players into eco-friendly green machines.

iRecycle can be downloaded FREE from Earth911.
