Tai Chi Is Good for What Ails You

Researchers in Australia have taken a close look at tai chi, a centuries old Chinese martial arts practice, and confirmed that its rumored health benefits are valid. The idea that tai chi is good for the body is no stretch.

The study, from Sydney Australia's George Institute for International Health, has linked the practice of tai chi to marked improvements in pain reduction in arthritis sufferers has researchers setting their sights on investigating effects of the exercise regimen on those with chronic back pain.

One of the traditional Chinese martial arts, tai chi dates to the late 16th century. The practice underwent a surge in interest in the West beginning the turn of the last century, and has since gained in popularity worldwide as a means to achieve physical strength and flexibility as well as a calm, disciplined state of mind. The health benefits have been long observed, and have included a range of cardiovascular, psychological, and musculoskeletal improvements.

The researchers currently are recruiting subjects for its next investigation, which they hope will shed light what measurable benefits tai chi may impart to chronic back pain patients.

This may offer a ray of hope for those who those who ignored Mom's advice to lift heavy objects with your legs, not your back.
