Calendar Girls: Texas Ladies Go Topless for Charity

A dozen women pose for a 2010 calendar aimed at raising money for a San Antonio-area animal shelter

bahscover-s.jpgRespectable Lone Star gals typically don't bare it all in public, but when asked to help homeless and vulnerable animals at their local shelter, a dozen Texas women were more than willing to doff their tops.

A group of San Antonio ladies are garnering nationwide attention for Shirts off their Backs, a 2010 calendar to benefit the Bulverde Area Humane Society.

"I've seen the movie Calendar Girls and thought it was fantastic, so I thought, 'Why don't we do this? Why can't we do this?'" Barbara Hall, president of the Bulverde Humane Society, told KSAT-TV in San Antonio.

Hall explained that the group needed to do something dramatic because shelter donations were down while the number of animals seeking homes spiked. She presented the idea to Lynda Binkley, the organization's secretary, who immediately jumped on board.

It wasn't hard to for Hall to find volunteers ready to strip down, and quickly assembled a group of pinup models ranging in age from 28 to nearly 75. And don't worry, this calendar is officially PG-13, with items including animals, flowers and even a motorcycle strategically covering up their unmentionables.

Of course, not everyone loves the calendar, but for the most part it has its fans.

"My granddaughter's boyfriend said, 'Kudos to you, it's going to college with me,' " said Binkley.

"I think everybody had a lot of fun, and we knew it was going to be older women, but it's really about the dogs," said Jennifer Hamlett, aka Ms. February. The group hopes to raise at least $12,000 for the shelter through calendar sales.
