The Eye of the Storm: Get Ready for Hurricane Season

Another June has arrived and if you are lucky enough to live near the beach, June brings more than just sunshine and pool parties. It also marks the beginning of what has been proven in recent years to be a very eventful Atlantic hurricane season.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 36 million people live in coastal areas most threatened by Atlantic hurricanes, including the coastline running from North Carolina to Texas. That data translates to about 12 percent of Americans needing to prepare for the 2009 hurricane season.

It is important to be prepared ahead of time in case disaster does strike near you. The consequences of such neglect became evident as America witnessed the devastation Hurricane Katrina imparted on the Gulf Coast — and especially to the City of New Orleans.

Today, storm damage remains widespread in New Orleans as the city approaches the four-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on August 28, 2005. To help support the ongoing rebuilding efforts, the newly launched brand dixiePatches (specializing in all things southern and charming!) is doing its part by donating a portion of the proceeds of each sale of the Hurricane Palm charm to the continuing efforts to rebuild New Orleans.

Ready or not, hurricane season is here. Take action now to ensure you will be prepared in the event of a hurricane near you this summer. And if you’re going to be hunkered down indoors while riding out the storm, you might as well look cute while doing it — and at the same time contribute to the rebuilding of one of America’s most loved historical cities.
