In Sleepless in Seattle, the quintessential 90s romance classic which starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, Ryan's character Annie Reed declares, "Destiny is something we've invented because we can't stand the fact that everything that happens is accidental."

She has a point.

But dating for the new generation has become techy. People develop romances through Twitter, and texting -- and to a certain degree sexting -- has taken budding relationships in the 21st century to a whole new level. With the release of a new survey and Soapnet's new show "Holidate" -- you may have to rethink how you strategize your dating potential.

With "Holidate", say you live in LA, your future wife or husband could live in San Francisco. The show tempts fate by allowing you to swap cities and homes to meet the potential love of your life. The show, which premieres tonight examines the lengths to which singles are now going to meet their match.

Forbes.com looked at the other popular trend in the digital age: online dating. Forbes.com's latest survey shows New York is the top rated U.S. city for dating, edging out Atlanta. The Georgia metropolis was number 1 last year. Boston, Chicago, Seattle and D.C. rounded out the top 5.

How did New York snag the title? The annual poll assesses 40 of the largest U.S. urban areas for coolness, cost of living alone, culture, job growth, online dating, nightlife and ratio of singles to the entire population in the area. Financial stresses felt by New Yorkers who were once focused on earning top dollars are now shifting their focus to finding love.

But it was online dating that pushed it to the No. 1 position because it has more people with active online dating accounts than any other city in the country.

Which city should you avoid? Jacksonville, Florida which took 40th place. Better luck next year, Jacksonville.
