THON: The Great Student Philanthropy

What do you get when you mix children afflicted with cancer, 48 hours of dancing and 45,000 students together? The most unifying experience Penn State University has to offer.

THON, which is short for the Penn State IFC/Pan-Hellenic Dance Marathon, is the biggest annual student philanthropy event in the United States. It is a year-long effort which raises funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. With the support of students from all across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and THON Alumni all around the world, they continue to make great strides towards finding a cure for all childhood cancers. Their efforts culminate with a two day, no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon during the third weekend in February.

As the largest university in Pennsylvania, Penn State might be expected to do something as touching and selfless as this. Walking across campus any fall or winter day, visitors will find someone talking about THON or working a fundraiser or trying to obtain sponsors.

This past year, THON raised $7,490,133.87 and had record crowds at the Bryce Jordan Center, the arena where students and kids alike reside during the two days. During those two days, there is always something going on: faculty bands playing music, talent and fashion shows put on by the kids, and much more. How can you find out more? You can head on over to their web site and see for yourself. You’ll find that there is nothing that puts you more in touch with humanity and yourself than celebrating the lives of children. The world could certainly use more kindness and giving in these tough times - come be a part of it all.
