Tonic Mixtape: Florence and the Machine
"I just want to help [people] feel what I'm feeling," said London singer Florence Welsh, which is an intriguing statement considering she claims to write her best songs drunk or hungover. It's no wonder the British press is bananas about her.
Welsh, the namesake behind Florence and the Machine, ignited the U.K. music world last summer with her breakthrough smash hit "Kiss With a Fist" (see video below) and soon earned the 2009 Critics Choice Award at the BRITs. "Dog Days Are Over" and "You've Got the Love" followed, as did last April's "A Lot Of Love, A Lot Of Blood" EP.
A year after first crashing the British radio waves, the group finally releases its full-length debut, Lungs, on July 6. Though the three previous singles will all appear on the disc, FloMach released their new single "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" today along with a digital EP of remixes. The song is expected to give the band its first Top 40 hit when it debuts on the U.K. charts next week.
The Brit Awards' 2008 winner, Adele, went on to sell over a million albums, and FloMach added to their buzz by placing third in the BBC's Sound of 2009 pool. In the old days, it took time for these British acts to make it to American shores, but thanks to the Internet, incredible groups like this are at your fingertips now. Check out the video below and see what the hype is all about.
