Sky Diving Granny-Style
If it's true that age is really just a number, then Jane Bockstruck is living proof. The Bingo-loving New Hampshire granny demonstrated that recently when she attempted skydiving for the first time earlier this month... at the ripe old age of 92.
Why did she decide to do it? "I have no idea," she admitted to The Keene Sentinel in New Hampshire. "I must have read it someplace and all of a sudden, 'I'm going to go skydiving.' So I did."
The decision somehow makes sense when you learn more about the nonagenarian's colorful life. She's been married seven times ("somebody's got to do it," she explains), has traveled the globe and held jobs including working for the United Fruit Co. in Honduras, as a front desk clerk in Mobile, Ala. and as a seamstress for the John Wayne film "True Grit." In that job, she claims she went up to Duke and proclaimed, "'Mr Wayne. I'm supposed to tell you I've been in your pants all day.'"
But still, Bockstruck admits skydiving at her age is adventurous, even for her. That's probably why she really can't remember the jump. "I must have blacked out or something," she said, laughing. "When you get that close, you say, 'Oh God. How stupid can you be?'"
At least Bockstruck was smart enough to get clearance from her doctor before the big jump, who determined that her blood pressure was fine and she appeared in relatively good health. She also got the green-light from her family... even if they weren't exactly on board with her plan initially. "I thought she was totally insane," said her son, Scott P. Devine. "I'm only kidding, but you know, I had some serious doubts, for sure."
But that didn't stop him and many other relatives from heading out to watch her do the tandem jump, which went quite smoothly.
Now, her family's wondering what she has planned for next-year's birthday.
