UNICEF

In October of 2009, as more than 139,000 people were leaving unstable, remote border regions of Pakistan because of conflict, the United Nations Children's Fund was working with other partners to help the uprooted.

Since World War II, UNICEF has been working to protect and support those displaced during wars. It's also the world's largest provider of vaccines. UNICEF has people on the ground in 150 countries working to improve nutrition, health care and education for children.

As a testament to the progress the international aid organization is making, immunization rates are at their highest levels ever, with a record 106 million infants immunized in 2008, according to a new report, "The State of the World's Vaccines and Immunization." Measles deaths fell 74 percent between 2000 and 2007.

UNICEF attributes the increase to cooperation from developing countries with an alliance of organizations that includes UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

At the same time, UNICEF warns that vaccines available in wealthy countries are still not reaching an estimated 24 million children in 72 of the poorest countries in the world and estimates an additional $1 billion a year will be needed to deliver vaccines to them.

UNICEF is also playing a key role in the fight against AIDS by focusing on what it refers to as the "four Ps": preventing mother-to-child transmission, providing pediatric treatment, preventing infection among young people and protecting and supporting children affected by HIV and AIDS.

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund was created in 1946 to provide aid to children who were suffering in the aftermath of World War II. In 1953, it became a permanent part of the United Nations, according to the organization's website, and the name was shortened to the United Nations Children's Fund, although it continues to be known by an acronym referencing its original name.

UNICEF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965. Today the international aid organization has a nearly $3 billion budget, which comes largely from governments around the world.
