Tweeting for a Cause

On Friday, former Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi will celebrate her 64th birthday, nearly 14 of which have occurred in captivity because of her protests in the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar, also known as Burma.

This week, celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Demi Moore and Yoko Ono are among those “tweeting” and organizing a petition calling for the release of Suu Kyi. Their efforts are part of the “64 words for Aung San Suu Kyi” campaign, launched May 27, by a coalition of human rights and activist groups including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and U.S. Campaign for Burma.

In addition, 107 former or current political prisoners from 20 nations, including former Czech President Vaclav Havel and Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi, have organized a letter calling on Myanmar to release its 2,156 political prisoners and the U.N. Security Council to issue an arms embargo on the country.

Tweets, text messages, videos and photos sent in by celebrities and others are being shown at www.64forusuu.org.
