A Case for Superwoman
Superman was unquestionably physically stronger than Lois Lane. If they both caught colds, however, a new study suggests Lois would have been back on her feet quicker than the Man of Steel.
BBC News released a new health report this week saying women fight off disease better, and thus have stronger immune systems, than men.
The study indicates that the female sex hormone estrogen gives their immune systems an extra boost when combating disease. Estrogen seems to counter an enzyme, Caspase-12, which is known to barricade the inflammatory system. The inflammatory system is the body's first line of defense against bacteria and viruses. As men are usually more proficient in testosterone than in estrogen, Caspase-12 breaches our bodily defenses, and we consequently tend to fall victim a little easier to colds.
So guys, the next time your girlfriend or wife is working out with you and you feel that rush of superiority, put it in check. While you’re guzzling orange juice and taking your fish oil/Omega-6 pills every morning, she’s smirking smugly just around the corner.
