'American Idol:' Top 10 Nice Things to Say
For as much attention that goes to American Idol stars, equal amounts shine on its losers. Part of the appeal of the smash-hit series has been to mock the delusional, and devour the judges' nasty comments. Before the season premiere, I'd never actually watched the show — apart from YouTube and news clips of guys like anomaly sensation Sanjaya. My understanding was, that while surely the cream would rise and a winner be crowned, most of the fun in between was about having a laugh — at someone.
So, when I tuned in for Season 9 auditions on Tuesday night in Boston, and Wednesday night in Atlanta, I got exactly what I expected: a mix of extremely earnest mediocre singers, a sprinkling of raw talent and masses of others so deluded, that I can only imagine they've shown up on a dare. By the same token, the judges, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and guest hosts Victoria Beckham and Mary J. Blige, all very much lived up to my expectations — eye rolling, fits of laughter and dismissive comments. What pleasantly surprised me though, was the genuine kindness, enthusiasm and encouragement that came from the same panel — even the notoriously biting Simon.
