AMF Bowling Wants to Spare the Environment

When most people think about bowling, things like funny-looking shoes and cheap pitchers of beer probably leap to mind. Energy efficiency, on the other hand, not so much. Now, AMF Bowling and Lime Energy is trying to change that.

The world's largest owner and operator of bowling centers contracted with a company focused on energy efficiency to start a retrofitting project that, according to this GreenBiz.com article, will eventually take place in 286 AMF locations. So far, 43 bowling alleys in states including Texas, California and New York have been overhauled to increase their energy efficiency. The focus will be installing fluorescent lights in the lobbies and over the lanes, lights that will require about half the energy of the current light fixtures.

In all, AMF expects to save $3 million per year in energy costs. In addition, the project will be paid back in less than two years. According to this Lime Energy release, the project, which takes place across the United States and in Puerto Rico, began on April 20 and should wrap up by this fall.

But don't worry, the funny-looking shoes will still be available.
