André Agassi and Steffi Graf: First Where it Counts
André Agassi and Steffi Graf may not hold #1 titles in tennis anymore, but the husband-and-wife team took first place when it came to the race to raise funds for Haiti.
Tonic has learned exclusively that the couple were the very first donors to step up and make a donation to George Clooney's "Hope for Haiti Now" fundraiser. All the way back on Jan. 15 — a full week before the televised event kicked off, and just one day after Clooney put wheels in motion to get the telethon started — Clooney's office received an email from the doubles-partners-for-life, pledging $25,000 to Partners in Health, and offering to help in any way they could.
Clooney himself was excited to tell everyone they were the first to step up, a source tells Tonic.
Charity isn't a race, of course, and their being first doesn't lessen the impact so many other celebrities and individuals across the country made during the telethon, which raised a total of $66-million and counting. But it's a cool little footnote in both of their careers to know that they're still smashing aces when it comes to giving back.
