Anything but Vanilla: Try Some Savory Ice Cream
There's that town in California that hosts the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival. Gilroy, Calif., is a mecca for garlic enthusiasts and amidst the garlic-infused food offerings each year is garlic ice cream. Sounds ... pungent, no? I haven't tried it firsthand, but if it were so terrible, they wouldn't have it year after year. And garlic ice cream is just the tip of the frozen confection collection these days with the pursuit of the savory.
Sure, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry will always have a place in our hearts and cones, but the new wave of flavors are skewing more toward the artisanal, which is exactly what the book Making Artisan Gelato is all about.
In a "don't knock it til you try it" style, author Torrance Kopfer entices the palate with ingredients like pink peppercorns, ancho chili-infused milk and cayenne pepper.
During these last days of summer (say it isn't so!), there's never been a better time to try making some for yourself. A little shakeup to the palate isn't a bad thing, especially when you're talking ice cream.
