Avatar DVD Set to Debut on Earth Day
James Cameron is the first to admit that his mega-blockbuster film Avatar has a less than subtle environmental message.
And for even further proof of its eco-friendly campaign, the folks connected to the film have carefully chosen a DVD release date that will ensure even more green press: Earth Day.
On April 22, you can bring the Na'vi people into your living room and ponder the environmental themes Cameron has copped to including in the film.
"Avatar asks us all to be warriors for the Earth," Cameron said at a recent event sponsored by the Natural Resources Defense Council. "This beautiful, fragile, miracle of a planet that we have right here is our land. Not ours to own, but ours to defend and protect."
"A movie can create an emotional reaction," Cameron also said during the event. "When you see the Na'vi people being pushed out of the way as if they're insignificant, you feel an emotional reaction and that sense of moral outrage is exactly what we need to feel about what's happening right now on our own planet right here."
As E! Online pointed out, the DVD launch will encourage people to think green, but also generate even more green for Cameron and those affiliated with the film. After all, the Oscar-nominated flick — which took home several trophies but not the coveted Best Picture award — has already taken in a mind-boggling $2.6 billion worldwide.
But there's nothing to suggest that capitalism and environmentalism can't coexist, and we hope Avatar's Earth Day DVD release helps many more people think green on the same day we celebrate this great planet.
