Baby, Baby Times Two
Good things come to those who wait. For Anne Marie and Randy Hamlet, four squirmy, amazing bundles of love finally came their way after eight long, frustrating years.
Last month, the Rye Brook, N.Y., couple finally became parents for the first time — four times over. In an unusual twist, Anne Marie gave birth to two babies, while her sister-in-law carried the other two as a surrogate.
The Hamlets never expected parenthood would come in such an unusual way. The couple believed they would conceive quickly after moving into a large house in the 'burbs years ago with plans to fill it up with family. Yet fate had other plans. Anne Marie finally got pregnant in 2007 after her second round of in-vitro fertilization, but became devastated when they learned they lost the baby. The next year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer when her doctors found a lump during routine tests for her next IVF treatment.
They eventually decided to begin the adoption process while also looking for a surrogate. Randy’s sister, Marlo Barretto, offered to carry the babies for them and the grateful couple agreed. Doctors implanted her with two embryos, and decided to implant two in Anne Marie as well, even though they did not believe she could carry a baby.
You can probably guess the rest of the story. Nine months later each woman gave birth to two healthy babies — and now the Hamlets have four diapers to change ... not that they mind.
"I said, 'Anne Marie, you know, when they all cry, you're going to be going out of your mind,'" Barretto told Good Morning America. "She's like, 'You know, Marlo, what I went through, it's music to my ear, when you hear those babies cry. It's just music.' And she hasn't complained yet."
Like we said before, pretty amazing things come to those who wait — and never give up.
