Baby Pun Honors Big Pun With 'Glamour Life 2010'
The hip hop world was stunned on February 7, 2000 when rapper Big Pun died suddenly from a massive heart attack. The rapper was at the top of his game when he passed away. In 1998, his debut album Capitol Punishment became the first full-length album by a solo Latino rapper to go platinum. The album was also nominated for a Grammy, but lost out to Jay-Z's Vol. 2: Hard-Knock Life. At this time, Big Pun (short for "Big Punisher") also became a member of Fat Joe's well-known Terror Squad.
The rapper was born Christopher Rios in the Bronx. At the time of his death, he was survived by a wife and three children. Now, one of those children is keeping his father's legacy alive. On the tenth anniversary of his father's death, his son Christopher Jr., who now goes by the name Baby Pun, is releasing a commemorative track in his father's memory.
"Glamour Life 2010" features a voice introduction that Big Pun recorded for the original version of the track back in 1998. In the older version, members of Terror Squad like Fat Joe, Cuban Link, Triple Seis, and Armageddon join Big Pun on the verse. According to AllHipHop.com, on the new version of the track, "Baby Pun raps about his deceased father, delivering a verse that sounds strikingly similar to his dad's flow." He is joined by rappers Terminology, AC, and Realm Reality.
The song is a moving tribute from a son to his father. On BigPunForever.com, the late rapper's wife Liza Rios talks about her son's new song and his choice to become a rapper like his father. "Baby Pun loves his father and wanted to follow his footsteps. It's just really crazy seeing Baby Pun because he looks just like his dad. He doesn't try to be his pops, he just naturally is."
Baby Pun and his mother are not the only ones still missing Big Pun. A posthumous mixtape is being released on February 14 with the help of producers DJ Soul and G-B0 the Pro.
