Better Things to Say About Africa

Looking for good news out of Africa? Nov. 1 marks the closing date for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies "Good News for Africa Competition."

The world's largest humanitarian and development agency has, on its Web site called for a more positive perspective on Africa in the media.

"This is not about ignoring the real challenges faced by communities on the continent," explained Pierre Kremer, head of the IFRC’s communications department. "There are huge challenges that need to be overcome, and these need to be identified and analyzed. But at the same time, there are untold stories about resilience and strength in the face of this adversity."

Leading up to the competition, the IFRC commissioned an independent study on Western perceptions about Africa and confirmed what aid workers have known for years. According to the study, negative terms were used three times more frequently than positive ones in media coverage of the continent.

"The competition's goal is to celebrate the solutions and strengths that help communities overcome and even prevent disasters, health crises and other shocks," stated Kremer.

The winners will be announced at the IFRC's general Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya Nov. 18 – 21. A selection of entries will be featured on the IFRC's Web site in the lead-up to the announcement of competition winners.
