Back in Black
The Black Eyed Peas are apparently in the business of breaking records these days.
Just a few weeks ago, we noted how will.i.am, Fergie and Co. became the third group in history to top the albums charts and the top two Hot 100 spots at the same time. Remarkably, these were also career-first visits atop those charts for the group.
Well, as Britney would say, "Oops! They did it again."
Their single "Boom Boom Pow" has topped the charts for three months now, and the only group with the peas big enough to bounce the song from No. 1 was of course the Black Eyed Peas. That's right, the rap fab four's "I Gotta Feeling" topped "Boom Boom Pow" this week to make them just the 10th artist ever to replace themselves at No. 1. Not bad for a group that had never topped the Hot 100 before April.
So who are the other artists to accomplish this feat? Elvis Presley did it first in '56 with "Hound Dog"/"Don't Be Cruel" and "Love Me Tender," and the Beatles followed in '64 with "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You" and "Can't Buy Me Love" (the only ones to pull it off with three straight singles). After that, it took three decades until Boyz II Men added to the list with "I'll Make Love to You" and "On Bended Knee."
The remaining self-replacing artists include Puff Daddy, Ja Rule, Nelly, OutKast, Usher, and, most recently T.I.
