Getting Medieval in Brasov

Brasov is an old city that once had a significant German population, and it's this heritage that arguably gives the city the most beautiful medieval square in Romania. While it's technically considered the city center, the square is actually nestled right up against the Carpathians, which provides a stunning backdrop of tree-covered mountains. There's even a Hollywood-style Brasov sign in the hills.

Unless you chose a hotel or hostel out in the woods, your visit to Brasov will likely find you staying within walking distance of the popular city center. Both tourists and locals flock to the square, and there's usually at least one English-speaking staff person at the many restaurants and bars. The eating establishments also offer a wide variety, from burritos to brown bear fillets, though ice cream certainly seems to be the most popular dish in town.

So what's there to see in the medieval square? Popular structures include the central fountain, the 15th century Council House and the even older Trumpets Tower that used to sound the alarm when barbarians stormed the gates. The square also boasts a variety of architectural styles, like the gothic Black Church, the Renaissance-style Merchant's House (turned restaurant) and the beautiful Orthodox cathedral. Cafe tables line the square during the warm summer months, and the place becomes a big party during special events like Halloween and the Cerbul de Aur ("Golden Stag") music festival.

Transylvania's most popular city square is absolutely beautiful, but that shouldn't be a surprise. Vlad Dracula always had great taste, so what do you expect from an area he once called home?
