At Burger King, a Minor Embarrassment
Burger King: Home of the whopper of a public relations flub. The Associated Press reports that in St. Louis, Mo., a mother and her daughter were kicked out of their local hamburger joint because the daughter was not wearing shoes. No shoes, no shirt, no service. Everyone knows that, right? Sure, if you're old enough to talk, or for that matter, walk. Turns out the offending shoeless daughter was just six months old. What's more, shoelessness isn't even considered a health code violation in that city.
After the news media glommed onto the story, Burger King issued an apology to the family and said there would be staff retraining. Let that be a lesson. Accusing cute babies of wrong-doing will always get you in trouble — especially when that baby has a media-savvy mom who will call in the local news van.
The incident will go down as a small embarrassment for Burger King, but hey, you can't really accuse them of age discrimination.
