All Fired Up!

With the ongoing debate here in Europe about nuclear power versus fossil fuel power to help power the future, a group called Camp for Climate Action has started to descend on a village called Kingsnorth, in Kent, in advance of a major protest taking place next week.

The protests are over the proposed site for Britain’s first coal-fired power station to be built and opened in 30 years, a move which surely goes against Britain's attempt to reduce its emissions. It is reported that if this power station goes ahead, it would be the first of six new coal-powered stations to be built.

Activist Connor O’Brien said: “We want to make the issue of coal-fired power stations so big and so toxic that they will be widely opposed by the public and it will be impossible for them to go ahead. What we need is properly sustainable solutions” – See last week’s news.

The group plans to dig under fences, drop in via air, or invade on "pirate ships" and boats. While I applaud this activism, it worries me that these groups are giving the environment a bad name in the media and therefore to the general public as well. These people should highlight the good stuff going on to balance focus on the concerning activities. While the issue is important, I believe highlighting the good wins many more hearts and minds than focusing on the bad.
