Thank you SpaghettiO's
I don't think we can sing "uh oh SpaghettiOs," any longer. On the contrary, parents across the country can sing "thank you SpaghettiOs" for making their product healthier for kids at long last.
On Monday, the Campbell Soup Co., which has long produced the canned round spaghetti you can eat with a spoon, announced it would cut the amount of sodium in its SpaghettiO's by 35 percent. The change comes as more and more parents, consumer and health groups scrutinize the ingredients in popular kids' foods to battle childhood obesity.
"Changing the recipe of SpaghettiOs comes on the heels of reducing sodium in our condensed kids soups to healthy levels. It's also consistent with our commitment to advertise only sound food choices to children," Sean Connolly, president of Campbell's U.S. Soups, Sauces and Beverages, said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.
The company already announced plans to introduce a lower sodium version of the Os to hit stores in April, but this new announcement means all versions of the tasty canned meal will be available for sale in July.
The salt cutback means the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture can now give their blessing to the Os, because it meets its requirements for main dishes that are suitable for children. To meet these requirements, food products must be controlled for fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium and contain a significant level of at least two positive nutrients.
So thank you Campbells for making this healthy change, and a big thank you to the watchdogs who pressured the company to make its products healthy and nutritious for kids.
Oh, and it you love SpaghettiOs, check out their Facebook page here. (Yes, even SpaghettiOs have a page ...)
