Chris Hughes, Facebook Co-Founder, Introduces Jumo
You'd think being the co-founder of what is (currently) the world's most highly trafficked website would be enough for one person to do in a lifetime. You would be incorrect in that estimation. Chris Hughes, all of 26-years-old, has done much more than that. As reported on the Huffington Post, his second act was joining the Obama presidential campaign and being one of the main people behind My.BarackObama.com, and now comes his third act — Jumo.com.
Hughes sent out an email blast earlier today to let people know about the site's "soft launch." And what exactly is Jumo.com? As the article noted, "Think of the site as philanthropy, volunteerism and social networking all rolled into one." And as Hughes' email noted, it's "an online platform to connect individuals and organizations working to change the world." The word "jumo" translates to "together in concert" in the African language of Yoruba. Hughes spent a good portion of the last year traveling, and that included time spent in Kenya and Senegal, so Africa clearly had an effect on him.
The site is only a few pages right now, including a jobs page, a link to the site's Facebook and Twitter pages, a brief overview, and a chance to enter your email for further information. The HuffPo article mentions that there are currently three employees at the nonprofit, including Hughes, and that he's raised more than $2 million, including $500,000 from individuals. The site should have its full launch this fall.
The hope is that people can find ways to help that are uniquely relevant to them. As Hughes noted in the article, "There are a lot of people across America and in other countries who want to help, and I would argue that the Internet has not caught up with them. So the goal for us is to build a central place where individuals can come in and discover and [sic] organization or an issue that's personally relevant to them. And then connect."
Let's hope Jumo does what Hughes wants it to. If his track record is any indication, it's got a great shot.
