Cigs and Booze: A Lousy Prescription for Stress Management

Chronic worriers are stressed out, anxious, even depressed. According to an article in Science Daily, chronic worriers are likely to "self medicate" for their negative feelings.

Their medicines of choice? Cigarettes, alcohol and illegal drugs top the list.

Perhaps it's not surprising, then, that unmanaged stress can lead to earlier mortality. In fact, a recent study suggests that 20-40 percent of the increased risk of death is caused, simply, by an increase in tobacco use.

The lessons learned by studies like this one seem like common sense — but they could have a real impact on both mental and physical health.

For institutions, says researcher Daniel Mroczek, "A better understanding of the bridge between personality traits and physical health can perhaps help clinicians improve intervention and prevention programs."

For individuals, a little self-awareness could go a long way. Before plunking down your cash for a pack of Marlboros, or downing a six pack of Bud, consider the possibility that help might come in a healthier package.
