Did You Hear the One About the Comic in Oncoming Traffic?
Who doesn't need a good laugh when they're having a bad day? It's almost the best cure. If you find your car idling off the highway in Davenport, Iowa, you can pay a small fee for a big laugh.
It all started when the local comedy club shut down, and Don Hepner decided to step up and take his talent to the streets. When the light turns red, he has exactly 90 seconds to tell as many jokes as he can at 50 cents a pop and two for $1.
The 60-something jokster is no amateur, he's been doing stand-up for 13 years at venues around the country. With such experience, you know he's gotta have a few good ones in his pocket. He tells one car full of kids, "I gave my wife a milk bath for her birthday. The cow sat on her." If you didn't find that one funny, he has about 39 more, and if he tells them all in a hour he can easy make $20. Not bad!
You might get the impression that he heckles cars. There are certainly people who don't want to be bothered, but for the most part, he is appreciated. One driver says, "The way the economy is right now, everybody needs a little laugh in their life."
