For Vets, Another Form of Service
Promoting service is nothing new for Michelle Obama. Neither is helping veterans and their families. What's new in the "Mission Serve" initiative she launched on Veterans Day is that it combines these two interests, connecting vets with community service groups.
The program, coordinated by Service Nation, "a campaign to inspire a new era of citizen service in America," is targeted at helping veterans integrate more smoothly back into civilian life by getting involved in community projects. The Christian Science Monitor (CSM) reports that currently only 13 percent of returning vets report feeling that this transition is going well for them. Almost two-thirds of them report that they are frustrated by the lack of interest from their communities in using the skills they posses.
Michelle Obama knows they want to put these skills to use to help their communities and their country. "We need that energy," Obama said in a speech at George Washington University, according to CSM. "Whether it's running a rural health clinic or rescuing a community struck by a natural disaster, our veterans have what it takes for success."
