Huskies Coach Geno Auriemma to Auction Off Ties for Cancer Research
One of women's basketball's greatest college coaches also seems like a pretty stand-up guy. ESPN reports that starting tonight, when his top-ranked Connecticut Huskies square off against the 11th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers, Geno Auriemma will auction off the neckties he wears during the rest of the games this season.
The ties will be auctioned on eBay, with each auction lasting for one week after the finish of that particular game. The money that's raised will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Yow, who passed away last year from breast cancer, was the head coach of the North Carolina State University women's basketball team for 34 years, winning more than 700 games in her coaching career and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
According to the Waterbury Republican-American, this isn't the first time Coach Auriemma has auctioned off his ties for cancer. Last year, he raised "almost $5,000 for cancer research and advocacy programs for cancer victims and their families."
With a team that's been ranked No. 1 for 37 consecutive weeks, you would understand if he has more things on his mind, but clearly Geno Auriemma has his priorities very much in order, so we at Tonic salute him for that.
