Some Real Disney Magic
The magical world of Disney strikes again!
A man who jumped off a Carnival cruise ship sailing just south of Port Canaveral, Fla. Thursday morning, must have a fairy godmother. A neighboring vessel, the Disney Magic, quickly sailed to the drowning man's rescue, pulling him to safety just in the nick of time.
"We're incredibly proud of our crew members who were able to locate the individual in distress and bring him safely aboard the Disney Wonder," Disney spokeswoman Rena Langley told USA TODAY.
Passengers aboard the Carnival Sensation, which was on the final night of a four-night cruise, said they heard the man arguing with a woman before he jumped ship around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday night.
"He threatened to jump, and she said, 'Go ahead,' and he did," Marie McDonald, who was vacationing from New York, told KMGW News 6 in Orlando. "Then we heard the man screaming, 'Help! Help!'"
The ship put out a distress call, which the Disney Wonder answered because it too was heading back to port after a Bahama cruise. The Disney ship asked its passengers for quiet as they located the man at about 12:30 a.m. and pulled him onto the boat about 15 minutes later. The man had been treading water for about 90 minutes.
"Two things saved his life: He knew how to swim and hold on to hope, and he was wearing a white T-shirt beneath a full moon. The white T-shirt made it easier for them to see him," Johnny Gonzalez, of the U.S. Coast Guard in Miami, told Florida Today. "He was a little tired, but in good condition."
Meanwhile, Disney passengers were clearly proud of their crew for the rescue. "I'm on a Disney Caribbean cruise, and just now, we RESCUED A MAN FROM THE OCEAN," twittered one passenger, who uses the moniker BigHeadDennis. He later added, "Guess that Disney magic is real."
See, we told you so.
