Girl, 4, Contributes to Wigs for Cancer Patients

Helping others isn't usually included in the job description of most 4-year-olds. Evidently, little 4-year-old Amber Rose Davis is working out her own description. She recently got her long, blond hair cut short so she could donate the locks to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a nonprofit that helps women who are chemotherapy patients get wigs, according to a story by Kim Becknell Williams in the Charlotte Observer.

Amber's mother, Jan Davis, told Becknell Williams that the Davis' had family and friends who had dealt with cancer. In the course of the illnesses of loved ones, Amber had overheard her mother and her 8-year old sister, Kat, talking about donating hair to an organization that made wigs for chemo patients. Not wanting to be left out, Amber told her mother that she would like to give her hair to help a sick child.

There was a hitch, though. Amber's hair wasn't long enough to donate to Locks of Love, another nonprofit that provides wigs to chemotherapy patients.

So Amber's mother started looking into other nonprofit groups and hit upon Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Hair donations to Beautiful Lengths have to be only 8 inches long, which is 2 inches fewer than Locks of Love. Amber qualified.

Though Amber couldn't specify that her hair go to another child, the Pantene people assured her it would go to help women. Amber was happy about that, Becknell Williams writes.

“She waited for months for it to grow,” Jan told Becknell Williams. “She donated her long, blond beautiful hair.” Amber's hair was cut by Laura King at JR Renditions in Matthews, S.C.

“I felt good about it,” Amber said, after her hair was cut. Now, Amber's sister Kat is growing her hair so she can donate, too.
