Millions of Hours of Battery Power

In November of 1982, Hurricane Iwa hit the Hawaiian Islands, packing gusts of up to 120 miles an hour. Being an 11-year-old kid staying with friends, I remember being pretty freaked out by the whole thing, including having to deal with one of my first power outages. As it happens, according to this PR Newswire release, research has shown that "thunderstorms and tornadoes during fall months pose one of the greatest weather threats to power outages." With it being the first day of fall, people across the country will be at the whim of Mother Nature, so Duracell has decided to lend a helping hand. The company known for its batteries has pledged in excess of 10 million hours of battery power to "communities most susceptible to these occurrences." The company has partnered with "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" star Paige Hemmis (at right), inviting consumers to visit Duracell's Hours of Power Web site and just make a mouse click. When you do, a donation of power supplies will be made to the following communities: Chicago, Knoxville, Tenn., New York City, Springfield, Mo., and Wichita, Kan.Those who visit the site and make donations, which will be collected through November 15, can also encourage others to help through Facebook, using the #Coppertop hashtag on Twitter and via other social networking sites. Products that will be delivered include "Duracell Daylite LED flashlights and Duracell Instant Chargers for cell phones."As Bob Jacobs, Duracell marketing director, North America, put it in the release, "Because we have no control over when and to what degree weather will impact us, Duracell wants to take some of the guess work out of being prepared." As much as people in those communities can prepare for when Mother Nature strikes, it never hurts to have someone else ready to help.
