Eat Like a Viking Pirate
I already admitted my love for cheesy nautical nibbles in previous posts, so I was easily sold on the Zolotoye Runo (Golden Fleece) on Yalta's main promenade. You literally can't miss this place -- it's a giant Viking ship elevated sky high on stilts out over the water. From my table near the bow, I could look back and see the waves crashing against the promenade's protective barrier.
I had dinner there my first night in Yalta and ordered an expensive seafood medley with more fishies than a Christian church parking lot. While the meal could have done with a few less oversized octopus tentacles, it was truly a feast fit for Blackbeard himself. I made the wise decision of going just before sunset, and while the temperature drop gave me goose bumps, I had a great front-row seat for what would be the first of many Black Sea sunsets.
Before you say this restaurant sounds too cheesy for your tastes, keep in mind that Yalta is a tourist trap and just about everything there is mouse bait. So if that's the case, why bother to fake coolness at a bland restaurant when you could be living it up like Leif Ericson? This decade-old restaurant has the gorgeous view, the seafaring setting and the yummy mess hall eats for a swashbuckling good time.
Plus, you can make like "SNL" star Adam Samberg and say, "I'm on a boat [something-something]!"
