LeBron's NBA Rap All-Stars
NBA analysts say LeBron James needs the right four players around him to win a championship, but if that translates to the rap game, King James is ready for that ring. The soundtrack to the LBJ documentary "More Than a Game" now boasts a surefire hit single, "Forever," featuring hip-hop heavyweights Kanye West, Eminem, Lil Wayne and Drake. The song comes to iTunes on Sept. 15 and the album hits stores Sept. 29. The film debuts in select cities the following Friday.
"Forever" follows up a previously released single, the Mary J. Blige ballad "Stronger."
James, who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a high school junior, was in the spotlight throughout his final year in school. "More Than a Game" documents the future MVP's rise from decrepit inner-city gyms to his Akron team's journey to the national high school championship all set against the backdrop of LeBron's meteoric rise.
LBJ, who may or may not trail Kobe Bryant as the game's best player (I opt for the former), had no problem lining up the big stars for the documentary's soundtrack. There's the new Kanye West-produced Jay-Z track "History," and the ensemble "If You Dream" with Omarion, Jordin Sparks, Faith Evans, Tank, Tyrese, Toni Braxton, JoJo, Carlie Wilson, Tamar Braxton and Steven Russel. Chris Brown -- a.k.a. Lil' Ike Turner -- guests on the Ester Dean track "Drop It Low," while T.I. chips in the gem "King on Set" from behind bars.
The most interesting contributor, however, has to be Soulja Boy. Back in 2008, a playoff series between LBJ's Cleveland Cavaliers and the Washington Wizards turned surreal when Jay-Z and Soulja Boy were introduced into a spat between the star and the Wiz's DeShawn Stevenson. After a Stevenson diss, LBJ responded by saying that's like Soulja Boy trying to talk smack to Jay-Z. Stevenson then brought Soulja Boy to a game in DC, sitting upfront in the player's jersey, which led Jay-Z to record a rap track attacking Stevenson. Crazy, right? It's possible that everyone made up, but I'm guessing Soulja Boy simply decided to jump ship. I mean, LeBron certainly has the more pimped-out boat.
While it's nice to know LBJ can freely do the "Superman" dance again, "More Than a Game" is set to drop a soundtrack that might actually generate more sales than the film itself. With this many big stars, the album is a definite slam-dunk.
