Facebook Worth a Billion?
Turns out all that time you spend de-tagging unflattering photos of yourself is paying off — for you and Facebook. Today, Mark Andreessen, a board member of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based social media company, told Reuters that the site was on track to make billions of dollars in the next five years and could even make a billion dollars this year if it pushed harder on ad sales. He added, though, that it was more important at this stage for the company to retain and grow its base of 225 million users than to push advertising.
Two years ago, Facebook's founder and chief, tech wunderkind Mark Zuckerberg, landed on Forbes's billionaires list with a $1.5 billion net worth following Microsoft's investment in the privately held company, which led many to value the Web site at $15 billion. (He dropped off the list this year.) Facebook has never published revenue figures itself but has said that it expects 70 percent growth this year.)
So is the world's most popular social networking site really worth a billion? We probably won't know until it goes public, which Zuckerberg says won't happen for a few years. Until then, we'll be over here, racking up the newest high score on Bejeweled Blitz.
