Freedom in Fashion
In the world of Iraqi women’s fashion, less is more. And by less, we mean, tighter, smaller and shorter. At least these days.
NPR reports that as violence begins to subside somewhat in Baghdad, women are exercising their freedom in their fashion choices. No longer are women restricted to the hijab, the head-to-toe covering that conceals a woman’s shape, which was favored during more conservative times. Says NPR, "It was common to hear of women being kidnapped and killed for not wearing hijab."
But things are changing, albeit slowly. While most women still wear headscarves out on the streets, growing numbers are daring to take it a step further with "short skirts, tight jeans with long boots, and short jackets for cold days." This is especially true when they head out to social clubs.
One male clothing retailer told NPR, "They should be free to choose hijab if they wish, or they ought to be able to express themselves with Western clothing."
Fashion reflecting a newfound independence? It’s the new black.
